The 99 was born in 2018 from a simple idea: every voice matters.
The feminine voices, the gay voices, the Black voices, the alt voices and the otherwise of thoughts, opinions and experiences of the 99 percent of humanity that are often drowned out by the 1% that typically dominates mainstream media. You don’t have to have money or power to matter and be seen. You just have to speak up.
The 99 began as an online platform for gripping human interest features and essays that illuminate the complex, multifaceted nature of the human condition. The goal was to prove that we all have more in common than not, thus fostering more empathy and compassion among us. Over time, though, it has expanded to share the spotlight with people from all walks of life who want nothing more than to introduce their art or perspective to the world in the form of poems, short stories, activism-centered calls to action and much more.
Self expression is the goal here.
The 99 is undergoing a rebrand right now and will eventually expand even more to become a digital magazine. More writers, more stories, more humanity. In the meantime, enjoy the archives. Stick with us on this journey. With a little care and active listening, we can all take baby steps toward true unity and understanding throughout the human race.
